BELL ACQUA HISTORY
Bell Acqua the site of Two World Jump Records and a total of 9 Jump records were broken in the year 2003. These records were broken in a two day period the culmination of many water ski tournaments over a 30 year period beginning in 1978. Bell Acqua was conceived from a childhood dream of Phillip Todd and Bill Mahannah High School Water ski buddy’s who began to enjoy the sport at Lake Berryessa, California. Phillip Todd and Family along with co-developers Ron Wilcox and Bill & Lindy Mahannah joined together to develop the first tri-Lake Professional Water ski Tournament Community in the State of California. In the beginning, Bell Acqua was less than a cow pasture. A hole in the ground in which the cattle had to leave when the rains came, as it filled with water the remainder of a drainage basin that had been used as a borrow pit to develop the adjacent Rio
Linda Airport. Bell Acqua was the Third professional water ski tournament lake to be built in the State of California and was an instant success thanks to the help of Bob & Chris La Point who made Bell Acqua their water ski home for many years. The Bell Acqua Group was the first to bring a Master Craft Boat dealership to the state of California and began sales of Master Craft Boats in 1978. Bell Acqua evolved through a period of years to include Three Professional Water ski Tournament Lakes, Two Residential Communities, a Water Ski Boat and Accessories Service facility, and an apartment Complex all located on 78 acres within 10 miles of Downtown Sacramento. Through the years Bell Acqua has lead the way to better understand how one would live and train in a community of water skiers enjoying the benefits of walking to their own private lake and taking a ski ride without the burden of traveling many miles with boat in tow looking for that pristine water. Many highly recognized competitive water skiers have been raised in homes at Bell Acqua and have trained right here in their own backyard. Local Pro’s such as Terry Winters and Jason Paredes both lived, trained and teached water ski techniques at Bell Acqua. Many other highly competitive water skiers of all ranks and levels have come out of the Bell Acqua facility over the 28 year period from its inception.
Bell Acqua has become recognizable as one of the finest Tournament Water Ski Facilities in the USA and throughout the World. The home of INT and USA Water ski Tournaments including College Nationals, Western Regional and Pro Tour Championships. The former home of the Sacramento State College Team and present home of the UC Davis Water Ski Team.
Many skiers have recognized the exceptional conditions of the water at Bell Acqua Lakes the turbidity of the clay soil which suspends in the water creates a slow water condition for skiers skiing on a short line at high speeds. Many skiers at normal speeds will not recognize this benefit. But the Pro’s Pro Slalom and Jump skiers have made numerous comments through the years regarding the quality of the water at Bell Acqua. The North South Orientation of the Lake combined with the special water conditions allows skiers to perform to their highest standards.
